How did you come to powerlifting or Olympic lifting?
I’ve been working with a trainer for almost 5 yrs. Just to get in shape. I became addicted. Then I joined this group about 6 months ago. Shortly after that my trainer and another client were in a competition. I saw women my age there. I was so excited. I told my trainer I wanted to train like I was going to compete (at the time I wasn’t going to). That was the end of September 2019. My first comp is in March. I don’t know if I’m more excited or terrified!
Do you have any previous athletic or lifting experience?
I don’t have any official athletic experience. Mostly basketball.
Do you compete? Why or why not? If you compete, what do you like most about the competitions?
My first compilation is in March.
Equipped or Raw?
Raw
Do you have a coach or trainer? In person or online? How did you find your trainer/program? Do you have any advice for women looking for a trainer?
When I first walked into a gym 5 yrs ago, I had no idea what to do. I was given a trainer who then quite. He set me up with my current trainer. I’ve been with him for 4 1/2 yrs. I train with him 3 x week. I would sugget shopping around for a trainer. Watch how they work with their clients, ask them questions.
Where do you train? Gym, garage?
I was at a big box gym until last year when my trainer opened his own gym. It’s great!
What is the hardest part about beginning lifting as an older woman?
The hardest thing for me is to not compare myself to women half my age. In my mind, age and size shouldn’t make a difference. Lol. Also, I think it takes longer to get to where I want to be. And, recovery definitely takes longer.
How has lifting affected your health?
I’m stronger then at any other age. My kickboxing coach couldn’t believe my age. He said I wasn’t a typical 61 yr old.
What would you tell women just beginning this journey?
It can be very intimidating at first. With the right person to encourage you and push you, the sky’s the limit.
