How did you come to powerlifting or Olympic lifting?
I started in crossfit and one of my coaches encouraged me to compete in a local meet. With just two weeks of training, I got a gold medal and qualified for Masters Nationals 2018. I was hooked.
Do you have any previous athletic or lifting experience?
I was always athletic growing up. In 1999, I was in a near fatal car accident and gained 80 pounds. I kept that weight on until I found Crossfit in 2014.
Do you compete? Why or why not? If you compete, what do you like most about the competitions?
Yes. I love it!!! I love the weightlifting community. I have met so many amazing women and we stay in touch through social media and encourage each other.
Do you have a coach or trainer? In person or online? How did you find your trainer/program? Do you have any advice for women looking for a trainer?
I have a coach in Phoenix AZ. I see him once a week (Pre Covid). I train remotely the rest of the week.
Where do you train? Gym, garage?
Usually in a gym, but right now in my backyard.
What is the hardest part about beginning lifting as an older woman?
Having others believe in you until you believe in yourself. At first it was a little embarrassing always being the oldest one in the group. Now I love being the oldest strong woman in the group!!!
How has lifting affected your health?
Yes, I’ve lost almost 80 since I started crossfit and Olympic weightlifting
What would you tell women just beginning this journey?
Nothing is impossible. Get a coach and surround yourself with people who believe in you!! Don’t give up. Some days will be harder than others but they are all worth it. My coach likes to tell me “ if it was easy, everyone would be doing it”
