How did you come to powerlifting or Olympic lifting? |
Started working with the strength and conditioning coach at my daughter’s HS after 30+ years of running/Pilates/yoga. |
Do you have any previous athletic or lifting experience? |
Running, Pilates, yoga. HS basketball. |
Do you compete? Why or why not? If you compete, what do you like most about the competitions? |
No. I have SI Joint dysfunction and I have to be extremely careful how low I squat. I always squat to a box for the safety of my back. When my back is acting up I deadlift off of blocks. For me it’s not worth the risk to my back to push as I would need to in a competition. |
Do you have a coach or trainer? In person or online? How did you find your trainer/program? Do you have any advice for women looking for a trainer? |
I hired a HS strength and conditioning coach. |
Where do you train? Gym, garage? |
A High School fitness center. |
What is the hardest part about beginning lifting as an older woman? |
People don’t get why I do what I do. I can tell they think it’s “unnecessary.” When I was a runner and much thinner I received tons of compliments. Now people say nothing. |
How has lifting affected your health? |
Stronger. Energized. Improved body awareness and back health! I feel as if I can do anything now! When I was a runner I was always exhausted and run down. |
What would you tell women just beginning this journey? |
There is nothing else as satisfying or empowering! I feel so much more confident. 3.5 years ago I started this and last year became a certified Strength and conditioning coach at the urging of my trainer. I am now the assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at my daughters HS. I LOVE inspiring the younger generation! So now I am a lawyer by day and coach in the afternoon and weekends! |
