How did you come to powerlifting or Olympic lifting? |
I’ve been working with a trainer for almost 5 yrs. Just to get in shape. I became addicted. Then I joined this group about 6 months ago. Shortly after that my trainer and another client were in a competition. I saw women my age there. I was so excited. I told my trainer I wanted to train like I was going to compete (at the time I wasn’t going to). That was the end of September 2019. My first comp is in March. I don’t know if I’m more excited or terrified! |
Do you have any previous athletic or lifting experience? |
I don’t have any official athletic experience. Mostly basketball. |
Do you compete? Why or why not? If you compete, what do you like most about the competitions? |
My first compilation is in March. |
Equipped or Raw? |
Raw |
Do you have a coach or trainer? In person or online? How did you find your trainer/program? Do you have any advice for women looking for a trainer? |
When I first walked into a gym 5 yrs ago, I had no idea what to do. I was given a trainer who then quite. He set me up with my current trainer. I’ve been with him for 4 1/2 yrs. I train with him 3 x week. I would sugget shopping around for a trainer. Watch how they work with their clients, ask them questions. |
Where do you train? Gym, garage? |
I was at a big box gym until last year when my trainer opened his own gym. It’s great! |
What is the hardest part about beginning lifting as an older woman? |
The hardest thing for me is to not compare myself to women half my age. In my mind, age and size shouldn’t make a difference. Lol. Also, I think it takes longer to get to where I want to be. And, recovery definitely takes longer. |
How has lifting affected your health? |
I’m stronger then at any other age. My kickboxing coach couldn’t believe my age. He said I wasn’t a typical 61 yr old. |
What would you tell women just beginning this journey? |
It can be very intimidating at first. With the right person to encourage you and push you, the sky’s the limit. |
