How did you come to powerlifting or Olympic lifting?
After my late husband passed, my daughter tried convincing to try crossfit. I kept telling her that I couldn’t lift that heavy at my age. Finally after a year, at the age of 52, I gave it a try and fell in love with crossfit and lifting heavy.
Do you have any previous athletic or lifting experience?
I grew up a tomboy, so I’ve always been active, playing whatever sports my older brothers played. I mostly played softball competitively. The last time I lifted heavy weights was in my early 20s when I was a college cheerleader.
Do you compete? Why or why not? If you compete, what do you like most about the competitions?
I will compete in my first powerlifting meet in January 2021. I’m excited about that.
Equipped or Raw?

Do you have a coach or trainer? In person or online? How did you find your trainer/program? Do you have any advice for women looking for a trainer?
I have a few unofficial trainers/coaches. My crossfit coach teaches me how to lift correctly and safely. Others guys help me perfect my craft. My gym is a family environment and I’m the oldest woman there so everyone treats me like their favorite auntie. They call me “Mama Zetta” and push me beyond my limits. I love it.
Where do you train? Gym, garage?

What is the hardest part about beginning lifting as an older woman?
Doubting your abilities, fearing that you’re more prone to injuries (because that’s what non-lifters keep saying), and regretting not starting sooner.
How has lifting affected your health?
My health has improved as a result of lifting.
What would you tell women just beginning this journey?
Don’t rush the process. Enjoy the journey. Don’t listen to the haters.
