Athlete Story – Sally Goldman

Sally Goodman

I am 55, first touching a barbell 8 years ago at the age of 47 when I was looking for a way to get some exercise and somewhat randomly ended up at a CrossFit gym. I was immediately hooked and about a year later starting competing in local competitions. I was lucky to be part of a Regional team in 2013. I trained hard to get to the CF Games and while I finished in the top 30 in the World in my age category a few times (with my best finish as 22nd in the World), I was never able to break into the top 20.

After spending the time working on my weaknesses (gymnastics and cardio), 18 months ago, I switched my focus to powerlifting, and more recently, switched my training to Boss Barbell Club to fully focus on powerlifting. I’m having a blast with it and working hard to improve my numbers. My big goals are a 300# squat (PR is 292#), 200# bench (PR is 176#), and a 400# DL (PR is 369#). Away from the gym, I am a machine learning researcher at Google (after 18 years as a professor at Washington University in St. Louis). This year my husband and I will have been married 35 years. We have 3 grown children.
